Acidity refers to a condition in which there is an excess amount of acid produced in the stomach.
This excess acid can irritate the stomach lining and lead to discomfort.
It usually means burning sensation in the upper abdomen or burning in the chest region, also known as heartburns.
These symptoms are aggravated by spicy food, alcohol or certain painkillers.
1. RefluxAcid in the stomach returning into the food pipe is called reflux. It is due to loose sphincter or valve at the junction of the food pipe and the stomach. Hiatus hernia is the commonest underlying pathology. Patient can feel the taste of acid, food flavours or food grains in the mouth. Burning in the chest in the mid line is a common complaint. |

2. Hiatal HerniaMost of the time, pain from a hiatal hernia is related to acid reflux rather than the hernia itself. A hiatal hernia occurs when weakened muscle tissue allows your stomach to bulge up through your diaphragm. This allows gastric juice and food returning back in to food pipe. This results in burning sensation in chest. The pain may radiate throughout your chest This may also result into multiple symptoms like dry cough, hoarseness of vice, choking sensation and asthma. |

3. Ulcer DiseaseUlcers can be in food pipe, stomach or intestine resulting in burning sensation in chest and abdomen. It increases with chillies and spices and decreases with cold milk/ice-cream. Difficulty in swallowing can be due to ulcer in the food pipe. Fullness after small food intake, hunger like pain, nausea is due to stomach ulcer. 4. Gallstone DiseaseGallstones can sometimes contribute to or mimic symptoms of acid reflux. Gallstones can block bile ducts, leading to bile buildup and pressure, which might stimulate stomach acid production and worsen acid reflux. 5. Pancreatic DiseasePancreas is one of the most important organ producing various enzymes required for digestion. While acidity in the digestive system can contribute to pancreatitis, it is not the primary cause. 7. PsychosomaticStress factors play a major role in patient's illness. Heartburns, acidity, vomiting, loose motions, constipation, gas, abdominal pain can be attributed to stress or symptoms are exaggerated due to stress. Irritable Bowel syndrome due to psychosomatic element is a common problem in Gastroenterology. Stress factors can actually increase acidity and aggravate the symptoms of colitis etc. |

8. Heart ProblemAs food pipe and heart have common nerve supply heart problems like angina or heart attack can mimic symptoms of food pipe disease and acidity. In fact any patient coming with symptoms of acidity which is related to exertion, associated with uneasiness or sweating should be investigated for underlying heart problem. |
