It can be acute and transient, recurrent or chronic and disabling symptom of various diseases.
Good history taking is important for narrowing the possibilities.
It may need various laboratory investigations, endoscopy, CT scan, etc.
Loose motions could be due to following disorders.
1. GI InfectionsInfection of digestive tract can be acute like amoebiasis, giardiasis, worm infestations or bacterial infections like salmonella, Campylobactor E.Coli, viral infection, etc. Chronic diarrhoea can be due to serious diseases like tuberculosis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, thyrotoxicosis, malignancies of digestive tract. |

2. INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE (IBD)Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes extensive inflammation and ulcers ONLY in the colon resulting into loose motions, blood in the stools and chronic ill health. It is a life long disease and can lead to cancer. Hence proper treatment and close monitoring is required. Extremely effective modern medicines are available which can allow patient to live a normal life including pregnancy. For very advanced cases not responding to medicine, surgery (not an easy option) can offer a CURE. Crohn’s Disease also is an inflammatory bowel disease closely resembling ulcerative colitis but may involve small intestine in addition to colon. |

3. Food IntoleranceCommonest is milk intolerance. Pulses, like to Chana, besan, Rajma, Chhole and certain beans can produce excess of flatus and burping. |

4. Cancer of ColonColon (colorectal) cancer can remain silent for a long time but may present as chronic constipation or loose motions, irregular motions or change in bowel habits. Bleeding in the stool or anaemia due to chronic blood loss, weakness, loss of weight may be other symptoms. 7. IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS)Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the commonest disorder in gastroenterology. It can be a minor problem but in many patients it can lead serious disrruption of normal life. Recurrent abdominal pain, loose motions, constipation, gases, bloating, indigestion, acidity etc. can be the presenting symptoms. Every attempt must be made to rule out any underlined serious disease like cancer, IBD, intestinal tuberculosis etc. A good rapport between patient, family and treating doctor is essential for satisfactory treatment. |
