A person is considered to be constipated when bowel movements result in
passage of small amounts of hard, dry infrequent stools.
It can be due to lack of fibre in diet, poor water intake, lack of exercise, poor dietary or toilet habits etc.
However it can also be due to following serious diseases like cancer of colon, low thyroid status etc.
1. Faulty Toilet HabitsSince young age improper irregular timing due to school, travelling for job and non-availability of toilet facilities outside can be important factors for chronic constipation. |

2. Improper DietHighly refined food, junk food, lack of fibre in diet, like lack of vegetable salad, fruits, etc, drinking inadequate water need to be treated with proper advice. |

3. Cancer of the ColonIn elderly people this is the most important cause and hence should always be considered. Altered bowel habbits, loss of weight, griping pain in abdomen, mucus or blood in the stools, anaemia should raise the suspicion of cancer of the colon. Early diagnosis by colonoscopy can offer cure. 7. IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS)Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the commonest disorder in gastroenterology. It can be a minor problem but in many patients it can lead serious disrruption of normal life. Recurrent abdominal pain, loose motions, constipation, gases, bloating, indigestion, acidity etc. can be the presenting symptoms. Every attempt must be made to rule out any underlined serious disease like cancer, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), intestinal tuberculosis etc. A good rapport between patient, family and treating doctor is essential for satisfactory treatment. |
