Bloating is feeling of the abdomen being tight or clothes feeling tight,
mainly after heavy or oily meals. It is commonly associated with burping,
which partially relieves the symptoms.
Overeating, eating oily, fatty or junk food, eating fast, food intolerance,
swallowing air while eating (aerophagia) can result in bloating.
Bloating can be a symptom of following serious problems.
1. Tumours, TB, Liver DiseasesBloating can be a symptom of serious diseases like accumulation of water in the abdominal cavity due to TB, Cirrhosis of liver, tumour of various organs like pancreas, liver, ovaries, uterus or kidney etc. |

4. Cancer of StomachPain in upper abdomen, fullness after eating small quantity of food (bloating), nausea, poor appetite, vomiting, loss of weight are the presenting symptoms of gastrointestinal cancer. Early diagnosis with endoscopy, often improves prognosis. |

5. Food IntoleranceCommonest is milk intolerance. Pulses, like to Chana, besan, Rajma, Chhole and certain beans can produce excess of flatus and burping. |

6. Functional Gastrointestinal DisordersStress factor is known to aggravate various upper gastrointestinal symptoms symptoms including bloating. Hence psychosomatic factors also need to be attended to. Functional gastrointestinal disorder is commonly associated with fullness of abdomen, burning, burping, gas, etc. after meals but without any documented physical disease. |
