Blood in stool can appear in different colours like black, maroon and red.
It can be a streak of blood, drops or clots of blood, with / without pain in abdomen or anorectum.
It can also present as "occult blood positive" on routine stool examination where presence of blood is unknown to the patient
and is detected only on stool examination.
However presence of blood in the stool in any form can be an indication of a serious disease and needs to be investigated thoroughly.
Blood in stool can be a symptom of following serious problems.
1. Piles or HemorrhoidsPiles or haemorrhoids are swollen veins in lower rectum. Piles inside the rectum usually are painless, but tend to bleed. Piles outside the rectum can be felt as a swelling, pain and irritation around anus or bright red blood on tissue paper. Pushing hard to pass motion, chronic constipation can cause piles. |

2.FissureA cut or a wound in anal canal due to straining due to constipation is the commonest cause of fissure, leading to pain in anal region and blood in stools. |

4. DiverticulitisSmall balloon like outpouching in colon is known as Diverticulosis, commonly seen in elderly people. These can get infected producing pain in abdomen, acute or recurrent loose motions with or without blood. Colonoscopy is required for making correct diagnosis. |
